NY Hidden Gem: Louie's Pizzeria Boasts Top NYC Grandma Pie

By Hugo Mercer May 10, 2023

Discover the classic New York pizzeria, Louie's, offering authentic homemade pizza, pasta dishes, and more in Queens, NY.

Over a year ago, Queens pizzeria owner Louie Suljovic and his father, Cazim, were stabbed while attempting to stop a robbery in front of their store, Louie’s. Prior to making headlines, Louie's was already known for its outstanding pizza and homemade Italian cuisine. Located at the convergence of Jackson Heights, Woodside, and Elmhurst, along Roosevelt Avenue, Louie's offers a diverse range of culinary choices.

In a world where $10 pizza slices are becoming the norm, Louie’s represents the classic, old-school New York pizzeria. The 15-year-old establishment's unassuming storefront understatedly showcases its brilliance. One of their most popular dishes is the grandma slice — arguably the best in any borough.

The secret to Louie's success may lie in the tang of the marinara, the mozzarella's stringiness, or the dedication poured into each fresh, in-house pie. The pizza menu, which features all the classic toppings and combinations, offers personal pizzas starting at $7 and family-size pies from $12 to $22.

However, Louie's is more than just a pizzeria. Their homemade pasta provides the authenticity that store-bought brands lack. Opt for the agnolotti — ricotta and spinach filled pockets, generously smothered in creamy pesto sauce. With enormous portions at affordable prices, there's something for gluten-free customers too. The entrée menu, featuring gluten-free ribeye, chicken or veal Marsala, and salmon, offers substitute pasta for $1.50 and base prices ranging from $11-$18.

Louie's displays an eclectic collection of sentimental artwork, including two hand-drawn Popeyes as a tribute to the owner's father. Louie and Cazim were attacked, but Louie still works 90 hours a week, determined not to go anywhere.
